That moment was a really tear jerking moment. You could hear in Ten's voice that he wasn't just speaking for the Doctor (who went through a whole lot and personally I felt gained loads of character development) since he's aware his current self will be forever gone, but I could also feel he was speaking for himself as well. Even now Ten's regeneration was a far better regeneration than Nine's due to Ten's regret and grief. Also from what we know, Ten also lived a very short regeneration. This regeneration only lasted 6 years was it? Here we have Eleven who has lived for about 300 years or so and carried with him great guilt for Amy and Rory's deaths, and he's just now realized how important Clara is to him. I wouldn't be surprised if he even begins crying tears as he finally regenerates instead of just being upset.

And let's not forget why Ten was so sad about regenerating:
"Even then, even if I change, it feels like dying. Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away. And I'm dead."

Bullpomegranate. Regeneration is not death. Death is final, it's messy, and it's sad. Regeneration is bittersweet in a way, but it is not the end. He may act slightly different but he is still the same man. The Tenth Doctor can claim that a "new man goes sauntering away," but then he needs to explain why he told Wilf he thinks he's lived too long. If he truly thinks of himself as a completely new man, he would have never considered six years to be too long.

The First Doctor told his companions that it wasn't over, and he had never experienced regeneration before. The Second Doctor was forced to regenerate by the Time Lords and, while he fought to stop them, he never cried like a child over it. The Third Doctor faced his fears and regenerated with class and dignity, making sure Sarah Jane knew everything would be okay. The Fourth Doctor actually witnessed the representation of his next incarnation and didn't whine or complain that he was going to regenerate soon. No, he saved the day, fell to his death, and then smiled at his companions and told them that everything would be okay. The Fifth Doctor sacrificed himself to save Peri knowing that he might not regenerate. Like the Doctors before him, he did not whine or cry, despite being in intense pain and not knowing what might happen to him. Like the Third and Fourth Doctors, Nine made sure to reassure his companion and make sure she knew it was not the end. Meanwhile, Ten makes this big deal about regeneration, treating it like death when it is clearly not. He wants you to feel sorry for him and, after somehow halting his regeneration to go look at his companions one last time, lets out the pathetic whimper "I don't want to go" to Murray Gold's over-the-top orchestral soundtrack.

Yeah, I hated David Tennant's regeneration. Just an entire episode of him crying and whining. I liked Tennant's Doctor because he was funny and energetic, I hated all the whiny emo episodes, and his final one really pushed it a little far with how much of a big deal it was. I know it was the end of the RTD era but it was still no excuse for such a painfully cringeworthy episode. I doubt any other companions got that much attention, but no lets spend an entire episode saying goodbye to a bunch of chavs from the estate, right.

The Russel T Davis era itself was a bit too childish, silly and camp for my tastes, I know the show is kinda like that anyway, but not that in your face about it. And the series finales were always over the top and ridiculous, with special mention going to the one with the Master taking over the world, what a pile of trash that was.

I much prefer how it is now, it's Sci Fi and often dark, but still has its camp and funny moments and the occasional breather episode.

I thought Day of the Doctor was brilliant.

At the start, I didn't like it. Matt Smith, David Tennant and Billy Piper were kind of... crap, and overacted on their own, but once the 2 doctors met, they were really funny and worked well off each other. And after Billy Piper got over her rather weird introduction, she played the role of Bad Wolf really well.

The Zygon story was... meh, but the special effects were good. It also wasn't really resolved in a meaningful way.

Obviously the main plot was the Doctor one though, and I liked that a lot. especially towards the ending.

Hngggh, what a cameo.

The last scene was also brilliant, with the 12 doctors all standing together.

I'm a bit worried though, it looks like Doctor Who is in its endgame now:

There was only mention of 13 doctors, the doctor is talking about his death at Trenzalore, Clara has journeyed alongside all 13 Doctors, and after 1200+ years and 12 lives, the Doctor has finally stopped aimlessly travelling, he has an objective now.
It looks to me like the end is coming, which is a bit sad

Of course, we still have the entire Peter Capaldi (13th Doctor) era to get through, so we'll have to see what happens.

Overall though, I think it was a very fitting and very well made tribute to 50 years of the shows history.

Technically, he's the 13th, since John Hurt is actually between what we know as the Eighth and Ninth Doctors.

Well, Stephen Moffat is being an awkward bastard and calling John Hurt's doctor the War Doctor, rather than the 9th.

I don't see why though, this just makes things needlessly complicated.

especially since they explicitly called Hurt's Doctor the Doctor towards the end. What was the point of all that if he is still the "reject" doctor? AND he was counted as one of the 13 doctors when they were saving Gallifrey. AND he showed up alongside all the others at the end.

I had tears of joy in the last ~20 minutes of the special.

I honestly didn't expect all the Doctors to appear, even if they weren't physically present. It's the meaning and purpose of all 13 Doctors working together to save their home planet that made it so touching and awesome. It was also a grand way to introduce the 13th Doctor. The whole special was amazing as a whole. The interactions between the 3 Doctors was hilarious and cool; the fact the younger War Doctor acts more like an old man to his older selves than the other way around is ironically funny. Also really great acting from the War Doctor to make you feel for him in the course of a single special. I feel portraying the War Doctor as so worn down and tired most likely helped. While it was unfortunate the 9th Doctor didn't make a true return, just seeing him appear was good enough for me.

It's not a true regeneration in the 13 regeneration limit per se. We may be able to get one final Regeneration past Peter Capaldi. But it's Moffat, so he probably has a Magnificent Bastard story to explain. He did after all managed to explain the Time War, explain what happened in between the 8th Doctor and 9th Doctor, and make it so saving Gallifrey doesn't cause a Time Paradox concerning the War Doctor and the 10th Doctor (since they'll forget whatever happened and thus the War Doctor will continue to think he destroyed Gallifrey rather than save it, preserving the time line).

tl;dr Don't question Moffat, he's probably got a very planned reason for what he said.

About the 13 regenerations limit...

It's not really set in stone. The Valeyard, who was an incarnation between the 12th and final regeneration, was to be given the Doctor's remaining regenerations after the Doctor's execution. The Master was offered a new regenerative cycle if he helped the Doctors out in The Five Doctors. Now, with the Time Lords back, I see no reason The Doctor won't be given any extra regenerations. The Time Lords may be dicks 95% of the time, but they can occasionally be generous.

Plot twist, again

Although it was thought that we had at least one last regeneration after the Eleventh becomes the Twelfth Doctor on Christmas Day. However, Steven Moffat has now revealed that this is not the case.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, he pointed out that the Metacrisis Doctor (generated when the Tenth Doctor was shot by a Dalek and he diverted the excess regeneration energy into his own severed hand) counts as one regeneration, and now so does the War Doctor.

So the Eleventh Doctor is now the Thirteenth Doctor (despite what Mr Moffat may have previously clamed). And Peter Capaldi is lined up to play a man who cannot exist.

Or, as Steven himself has put it: ”The 12 regenerations limit is a central part of Doctor Who mythology – science fiction is all about rules, you can’t just casually break them.

The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot has a nice surprise at the end...

Hilariously late, waited for finals to be over to watch the 50th.

I thought it was great. Was expecting Billie Piper to reprise her role as Rose, but I think she did the part of "Bad Wolf" quite nicely. Absolutely loved John Hurt's performance as the War Doctor, as well as Tennant reprising his role as 10. Jenna Coleman/Matt Smith are always nice to see, I love their dynamic.

The little nod towards 10's last words by 11 was kind of nice, I think it made me hate it a little less (kind of justifies the over-the-top exclamation, if only a little bit).

Did they use a stand-in for 9? Something about it just looked off.

I decided to start watching this show because of all the hype around it, just finished blink and holy pomegranate.

Oh, that's too bad. 9 was probably my favourite of new Who.

Extremely excited for Silent Night and to see Capaldi, I've been a huge fan of his for years.
Sad to see Matt go though.

Since OT is the 50th though, I went to see it in theaters with some friends and good times happened (unshamelessly picstiches). The place was packed and I met a lot of really fun people.
