In short, the Word otaku have a Heavy meaning depending on where you use it, in Japan it means exactly what Malthe says, but in the other part of the world it can probably mean what Razmos says.
Also hikkikomori its a person who absolutely stays in his room/home and mostly refuse to have any contact with the outside or going outside of his room due to some fear,trauma or some other reasons (Difficult to say what). And otaku can still go out of his room/house to eat, buy their toys and other stuff, but spend most of his time in his room with his object of obsession.
