Before I close, I've always been under the impression that gas prices are not based on supply and demand.

QFT. Oil does not follow the traditional supply and demand model as it has become a sociopolitical issue. If you keep government out of it gas prices would likely be higher (many governments try to lower prices, especially China). Another thing is that most oil companies are state owned (Russia, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and probably many others).
