Byakuya might be in a character level equal if not close to that of Itachi in Naruto. In the first arc, he was the main rival/obstacle for Ichigo to save Rukia.
I wouldn't call development him changing his personality behind the scene (the year and eight months before the Xcution arc). I consider Kubo did right showing us that passionate side of him after facing fear in this chapter, however it was too damn short, thats why I really hope he isn't down and that there's is more to this fight before he dies.
Where did you get that this manga is ending in 5 months? Last time I heard it was gonna last longer than the Aizen arc, which would be a few years then.
