This is an old glitch.
If you do CPQ, you'll see it happening alot of time, especially on bandits because of it's 6 hits.
Back when I did CPQ, my bandit does 300*6 dmg/ hit. When def up is used, I still do about 300*2/ hit. so about 1/3 chance of it still hitting. And yes, it actually does dmg, not that it shows high dmg and actually does 1, because I can still kill the monsters with spam SB while def up is used.
