They're betting on programs like Hackshield and Black Cipher to stop hackers. The idea isn't a bad one since it would make sense to stop hackers before they could even reach the login screen, but one that obviously isn't working. Nexon needs to realize that hackers will slip through the cracks and they need to take an two-prong approach both in-game and pre-game.
Like a lot of you have said, Nexon needs to actually become a part of the community in order to understand how players think and play and how to stop hackers. I'm surprised Nexon hasn't tried infiltrating the hacking community, either. They sure did with private servers.
I know when private servers were a big deal, many programmers actually wanted to work for Nexon and were using private servers as experience and including many ideas they knew Nexon wouldn't implement. Obviously the situation is different, but I'm sure there would be a few hackers who would turn if the right incentive was given.
Bottom line, in my opinion, is that Nexon has never made a real effort to combat hacking. It's basically that big scary mammoth of a thing that Nexon has been trying to ignore - the elephant in the room if you will. Every time it rears it's ugly head in a big way, then Nexon pays attention. Anyone who has played the game consistently since its release in North America knows that MapleStory usually goes through periods of increases in hackers, and then dies down. The last year or so it doesn't seem to be dying down, though. It really seems like Nexon has lost control of many facets of the game, and I think they're trying to downplay the real issues greatly.
