Recoloring stuff doesn't seem too weird for those of us who played console games such as Final Fantasy; every time you encountered a new and stronger monster, it would most likely be a recolored version of a lower level one. Many weapons and equipment were much the same, or they'd change the color and add a small embellishment with an increase in power.
It may seem lazy, but tradition is on their side.
