I felt more like Fairy Tail was being cheated, more than them being underpowered. Lucy was going to actually beat Flare, but Obra cancelled her spell and collapses of exhaustion from casting Uranometria while Flare is still just barely standing. Jellal was probably going to have a good and respectable fight (that he probably would have won) against Jura, but lost in a completely stupid way. I would agree, however, that they seemed really underpowered during Hidden; otherwise, they were basically cheated or got unlucky with the game selection (Like 2 Dragonslayers during a game that takes place on a vehicle, dammit). I think it's been about time that they really get the chance to show off now.

I'm also wondering, they decide to act on whatever plan they have when Luxus is going to fight one of them? I wonder if this has anything to do with way back when Ivan wanted to get the Thunder Lacrima back from Luxus...
On Obra: I wonder if it's possible that he can hide his magic. Nobody noticed it when he nullified Uranometria during the first fight of Day 1. He probably felt that this game wasn't worth using his magic on and gave too much of a risk of blowing his cover, so he just threw in zero effort- but he probably would try it in a fight.
I personally found it odd that Nullpuding was able to get the day's fight match-ups before. Maybe they are in on some kind of conspiracy for the games, after all. Perhaps working for Arcadius or the King? That's one explanation for their plan and how they got registered as a legal guild- they got help from someone up above..
Your theory on the Thunder Lacrima is interesting. Now, I'm curious if that'll play out at all, or perhaps Alexei's fight is just meant as a distraction, or something.
