I've got a better idea of what happened:
He was on the toilet and had a particularly smelly number 2, so bad it would knock out a sewage worker.
Seeing that he had no other alternatives in the poorly stocked bathroom, he went to the kitchen to get BBQ sauce, which is a strong enough smell to cover it up a bit
When he began to squirt the BBQ sauce, he missed and got it all over the seat. Having used up all the toilet paper and there being (again) no other alternative, he went to get some buns to wipe up the BBQ sauce
on the way to the bathroom he got hungry, ate the buns and then forgot about the mess and went to bed.
MYSTERY SOLVED.
