Actually, the best solution wasn't to remove it.
It was to fix it. Make it server sales only, fix security bugs.
OR to make a decent cash trading system. Where you can theorically get anything from the cash shop, like expanders, etc. Or to make some silly system like "do this quest weekly to get 100 maple points". 100 points a week won't get you anywhere unless you spend more, but it would still be fair for everyone, to get things if you save enough after time.
That way, they can REALLY label it as free, and people would be happy to spend more, instead of feeling backstabbed. Valve pulls a lot of these, and look how well it goes for them.
