Sounds familiar to what happened in JMS's Justice Shop. Everything insanely expensive (in terms of coins) and you can only get 1-2 a day.
As for Profession Items and their meso costs...It's probably an attempt to reduce the amount of mesos in the economy. Since everyone needs to buy Profession items, increasing the price makes more mesos fall into the black hole of hell to never be seen again. I mean, let's face it, 25k is nothing. You can get that in a few minutes at most at higher levels.
