Spoiler
I don't have a problem with the romance itself, but it just needs to be spaced out properly. It was fine in the previous episode with Mako and Asami, because it wasn't smashed into one giant episode. Even in the first Series they evenly spaced out the romances like Sokka x Suki, Aang x Katara, and even that slight Zuko x Katara. It was nicely spaced out where it worked well with the rest of the story. Here it felt like it was a moment of "pomegranate, we haven't done anything dealing with the main trio's romances yet. STUFF IT INTO THIS EPISODE! Oh, and don't forget to make it conflict with their tournament because they're all mad at each other 'n pomegranate!"
It also seemed very generic, how a lot of romances are done in stories. It worked a lot better in the original series, where the romances evolved over time, and didn't just pop in for huge visits in some episodes. I mean, sure Korra has been eyeing Mako for a while, but that never really went anywhere in terms of evolution or story.
For all I know the later parts of the story will work the romances in, and this is just a starting point for them, I don't know. If it ends up being that way, then fine. I'm not saying it was a bad episode, it was still pretty good. I just wish it had more main story line evolution. Even a brief talk with Tenzin about Korra's vision would have been sufficient. It's like everything was abandoned just so that they could move along the Pro-Bending/Romance elements. I dunno about you, but if I was Korra I'd really be trying to figure out what those visions were about (Assuming she remembered them, which I would think she would have, but eh, I guess she could have forgotten).
