I only ever saw them by themselves, and looting everything, including untradeable chairs, via pets.
BTW, I was generally able to get the loot anyway, as long as I got about a minute head start (300m hp or so). Apparently because, being two, they "ks'ed" each other as well. Not really sure how that works.
