Is that really a variation? I'd wager that is a different problem. 9 hit pierce = instant crash 100% of the time. It' seems obvious that it creates some sort of unhandled error. If yours only crashes occasionally, its more likely to be memory/connection related especially with rumors about that new mage skill causing extremely high memory usage
