Exactly; controversy is damaging to profits and image. If I remember correctly, gays make up 6% of the American population. Out of those, only some will play MS. Nexon will want to please the 94%, and as someone pointed out, allow something the mainstream considers "deviant" and the mainstream will dislike it.
I personally am against gay marriage, not out of homophobia but because I believe in the traditional definition of the marriage. To the best of my understanding civil unions and the like can be shaped to provide most of the benefits of marriage. Creative thinking can replicate gay marriage on MS, (marriage to mules combined with a Friendship ring.) For that reason I don't think all the controversy would be warranted.
