Gold its practically the stat that says who is having a good/great game, and who is having a bad/feeding game. (Cept for supports of course)
The whole laning phase is about playing smartly/better than your laning oponent and gain a advantage over him. It doesnt matter if neither of you gets a kill, as long as you either manage to push him once out of his lane, or be a better CSer than him.
