Assists don't count for jackshit, they also don't represent who did how much of the kill.
Everything you just wrote describes shitty teamwork/team play. Assists mean a ton (I'd rather have someone with 0 kills, 5 deaths, and 20 assists on my team than someone with 10 kills, 5 deaths, and 0 assists), they show that you're actively working with your team and helping get kills (most of the time). How much of the kill is also highly subjective - damage isn't everything. What about the guy who spams crowd control on the enemy, locking them in place/silencing them/debuffing them, making them harmless and unable to escape? They arguably played a much more important role in killing someone than just raw damage, though they may have only done 10-20% of the enemy's health in damage. What about the support that placed a ward somewhere important, allowing you to see a lone enemy walking in the jungle and set up an ambush? The current assist/kill system IS the most fair and, moreso, gives a team the most possible control over who gets the bulk of the gold from a kill - which is extremely important in organized team play.
