Assists don't count for jackshit, they also don't represent who did how much of the kill.
Because later on with more competitive and experienced play, specific champions need kills more than others. Say you play a soraka or alistar, you DO NOT WANT ANY KILLS. You may get some under extremely rare circumstances but more often than not, kills are wasted on you. Team composition is really important. Usually attack damage or ability power champions are supposed to get the most kills, so they can build their items faster and therefore do more damage.
Assists still give you money. The point of a game is to simply kill the nexus or get a surrender, who did the most work is irrelevant.
