How about it appears to manifest as "something", but it's just your mind (and fear) screwing with you and there's actually nothing there? It could represent a downward spiral into insanity; the more insane you get, the clearer the "something" becomes, and it eventually "kills" you (though you probably die of heart failure or something. inb4 Death Note) if you don't get over it/regain your memories.

Am I the only one who knows the plot of Dead Space 2? Because this sounds exactly like the plot of Dead Space 2.
