Unless they changed something in the translation from JMS the fish spear is the way to go anyways instead of a knuckle as somersault always counts as a stab and the fish spear has way higher base attack than any knuckle of that level.
Still, I've never been a big fan of buying every low level equip as you can level up so fast at that point its just a waste of money even if you can afford it.
