X Being the name mentioned.
Looks like # just serves as a pointer for who's profile the mention links to, and X is who actually gets notified. Though it could be that if # doesn't match X, it just doesn't notify anybody. Isn't really useful for me to test which is which, since all I wanted to know is if I could mention, say, Viaje, as "Pretty Pretty Princess" and for him to still get the notif.
Only place I see doing a mention manually being useful, is if there's a confliction in usernames. So if you wanted to notify somebody named "Eos The Poptart" but the regular way just notified Eos himself.
