I would say don't go for either full set, just get a top/bottom.
The only set bonus that's worth the loss of some % str and the pain of having to self cube (w/ meso I assume)/chaos is the 30% bossing one of the full Lionheart set, which, like you mentioned, is a bit difficult to get.
I don't think 30% ignore pdr on the VL justifies the loss of a bottom as well as the pain of cubing your own stuff either.
Therefore: I also suggest you get the 4 set of Lionheart if you can/want to while keeping a top/bottom if you really want some set bonuses. Otherwise, just spending the money on nice % equips is way better than halfassing an empress set.
