their crappy servers is partly due to the fact that they have a legal monopoly over maplestory, as they have the copyright. (of course, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that.) so noone else can set up another maplestory, legally. thus the uniquely addictive experience can only be enjoyed by being a customer of nexon. they have a position where their service does not need to be very good in order to continue being profitable. all they have to do is buy the license from their masters in korea and they are set. having bought the rights to the game from its maker they can milk it like a cash cow.
of course if anyone could set up a maplestory then nexon, with their current service standards, would quickly go out of business and the customers would move to another company.
so it is natural that we would expect the service to not be perfect.
also i heard that they made over 200 million dollars last year. wow.
of course it is their busines decision to balance the cost of new servers vs the damage to reputation etc. clearly they must think we are all very addicted to give such a dodgy service, that we wont quit.
