It's equally odd that a group would be coordinating a DoS/DDoS against individual channels of multiple games, including individual login servers, as it is that hardware would be malfunctioning across all those different servers simultaneously.
About the only thing I can think of that could malfunction on this degree to cause actual crashing would be a shared SAN going haywire, or an unstable electrical grid randomly dropping whole boxes, but both seem unlikely. No other resources would be shared across this many points to be a weakness this large.
This whole thing will likely remain a mystery forever.
Oh perhaps.. Their servers are just completely fucked?
Wouldn't surprise me if they haven't replaced them for 5+ years and these "server upgrades" are just adding stuff to them not actually replacing
