I realize it's an old(ish) thread but it wasn't answered.
I'm using Vista 64-Bit and I've never tried doing Zak or anything without doing the graphics trick, so I don't know if it's a solution or if I don't have a problem.... but;
What I do is start the fight on high graphics (How I always play) and then when it gets to the last arm I just switch it to low graphics. I don't D/C or lag at all.
