I'm pretty sure that characters DO have value.
Whether it be the items, the Nx, or the time spent.
If they didn't have value, then why do characters and accounts get sold for hundreds of dollars?

Just because the data is on Nexon's servers doesn't mean that it belongs to them. It is, however, their responsibility for what happens to the data.
Here, let's have an example.
Viaje asks you to look after his cat, Rick, for a couple days. You agree.
On the second day, you leave all of your doors open because you're high as a kite.
Eos, your neighbor, comes in and steals Rick and makes him his queen.
When Ray, the police officer, comes to question you, the cat didn't BELONG to you, it belonged to Viaje. But it is completely your fault for being incompetent, lazy, and a fucktard in general. Of course, I'm only talking about this scenario, this is all hypothetical. I would never call you that.
