I doubt that 100 DDoSers could make much of a difference on servers that accommodate thousands of people every day.

I do agree with you here. That was what I meant by "resources".

Granted, this comes from my understanding of DDoS attacks relying on a massive network of computers that needs to scale properly against whatever its attacking.
As you said, Maplestory is designed to accommodate thousands of active users.

Thing is, if this were simply a result of solar activity or some other general noise on the internet, you wouldn't see neat crashes of all channels in all servers except for one or two channels for each server.
Recall that each physical computer runs multiple channels (between 2 and 7, depending on how new it is and how busy the server is), so the likelihood of all instances but one crashing is pretty low. It could happen if Nexon did something that causes "deadlocks", which force the OS/DB to terminate all but one of the deadlocked processes, but somehow I doubt they did that randomly this morning and couldn't figure out how to undo it for hours and hours.
Therefore, this is obviously the result of malicious activity. Now, it could be a bunch of the usual channel-crashers, suddenly perfectly coordinated across all servers, and for some obscure reason crashing all but one instead of the usual one channel that is sufficient for duping. Or it could be someone else with a different "agenda" which is pretty much plain vandalism and griefing.

I don't claim to know. I'm just speculating while I wait for the situation to be resolved.

Watching the crashes, I didn't see the pattern you described.

In several instances, only a couple channels in a world would be down.
In other instances, entire worlds would be down while other worlds appeared unaffected.

You haven't done anything to show that it's "obviously the result of malicious activity".
