Ryze is a really weak mid pick in my opinion. He has no proper built in sustain, high burst or the tankiness he later has. Almost all casters are able to outrange him or burst him down during his somewhat weak early game. The only one I really see having trouble is Veigar but he's notorious for a bad early game. That ap scaling ultimate is really bad against a Ryze too. He's always a pain late game though so that he has going for him.
As for that other post, I like mercs better on mid kog'maw because it makes him more tanky and cc durable which is usually on the enemy ap mid. Teamfights are also messy and you can't really stop an Irelia dashing in that goes and stuns you or something like that. Tenacity helps you kite better and in the early teamfights that consist of 2-3 you don't always have someone watching your back like that. Zerkers are cheap and build on the AS you have. They also improve last hitting. Sorcerers aren't bad but I just don't like em on kog
