don't take any of it seriously, they just don't know how to communicate properly.
however, in the future, you might want to say 한국말못해요. as contradicting as it might seem, they will understand.

Took a while fiddling with google translate to find something that translates cleanly both ways, but would something like this be a bit more polite?
translates to "I'm sorry, I don't understand your language"
