As far as I know, the pact is unbreakable. I think Corazon is right.

Yeah, I thought so too, which is why I immediately thought of Dragonheart when I heard this bit about Freed and Afrien's relationship.

Lemme use an example of why my theory makes sense in Afrien being the weak link (hypothesis of course): Suppose, for example, I made a "Spirit Pact" with, let's say Horntail for odd measure (yeah, I know it makes no friggin sense, but still).

Horntail is a dragon of immeasurable strength. Through the contract, my life and his are bound as one existence. However, on Horntail's end, he'd be the life source (since he has the biggest amount of it).

Now, let's say an attack was aimed at me that would be fatal to me. Were I not "bound" in this case, that would be the end of it.

However, by factoring in that I essentially have Horntail's life force, an attack that would kill any ordinary human is more of a flesh wound if aimed at me. Even using said attack on Horntail would have similar pain, but could not outright kill (this is assuming it even lands a direct hit).

Now then, what if an attack was aimed at Horntail that was solely made to kill a dragon of Horntail's caliber? Said attack would have a greater, more magnified effect on me because 1)I am not a dragon, and 2)both a dragon's mass and tolerance to pain are greater than a mere human's.

Thus, if an attack aimed at Horntail designed SPECIFICALLY to kill him in one blow lands a direct hit, the resulting amplification of the damage involved would quite literally blow me to pieces.


In this case, Afrien took the attack meant for Freed. The Black Mage anticipated this, and had used the spell with the presumption it would hit the Dragon, not the human. He theorized that if the Onyx Dragon's loyalty was as strong as Afrien claimed, then Afrien would, by logic, shield Freed from any fatal attack, even if said attack was meant to kill him and not his human partner.

His theory proved correct, and thus Freed (and perhaps Afrien) died as a result of the power that was used in the conception of said spell.
