If you want to play supports like Alistar (and have some good CC + heal), Soraka is your best bet. (though you don't get that macho feeling that Alistar has)
Saying about Soraka, just duo queued with my friend in ranked, and I played Soraka to support him in a duo bot setup. Early game was quite horrible for us; we were getting caught and simply not having a good day. However, mid to late game, things started turned around. The enemy team simply failed to focus the squishies (me, LB, my friend [Corki]), and we simply started to win teamfights because we went after the carries. It really feels great when you "top your team off" during the middle of teamfights and give them a better chance at surviving.

Though that match was quite sloppy for me; not playing LoL most of the time this week made me quite rusty. Meh.
