My new rig is so bawss compared to my craptastic laptop xD That said, I'm still having some issues I would like to be rid of when it is convenient to do so.
I'm typing this up from school, so my specs will be as I recall them to be.
What is your current budget?:
Since we're looking at roughly double my Christmas "allowance", $200 is conservative, while $400 might be possible.
What part are you looking for? Why do you need it?:
I'm not looking to actually get all of these, but I would like to get the most out of my money. Make the graphics card a priority though.
-- Better graphics card than NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS.
There is an apparent issue with the 6xxx/7xxx GeForce series that causes some graphics to render improperly or not at all. I've come across only two instances where I've noticed this, and both had pretty devastating consequences to my performance as a gamer. Otherwise, even in spite of those things, I'd like to think it's my card that's the bottleneck in my system, although it is hard to say.
EDIT: Looking at this one so far... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814127510 $170, $160 after rebate.
-- Better keyboard.
I had no idea what terrors a budget keyboard could hold until I got my new rig. Ugh. Even the school and office keyboards do much better than this POS, and they don't have some power button that can be accidentally pressed to shut down my computer. I'm not looking for anything fancy, but I would like to have something that's functional, such as being able to press keys when I want to, when I need to, and not having keys that stay pressed when I let go of them. Fking POS.
-- Better mouse.
Currently have a budget mouse, which actually works fine, unless you are annoyed by squeaky wheels. My brother has a gaming mouse which he keeps preaching about, so mind as well throw a gaming mouse on the table as an option.
-- Different speakers.
I don't know if it's just me or the music I've been listening to (I don't actively gather music and have an iPod's worth to listen to), but I could swear some of the bass is being played through the speakers as well as the subwoofer. I would like to know how to test this out comprehensively without getting trial music production software, although knowing alternatives in hardware wouldn't be a bad thing.
What parts are in your current computer? Be as specific as possible. Links to Newegg/Tigerdirect are best. If you have a pre-built, include the make and model.
later... I have an AMD setup though.
EDIT: Oh yeah I am using an HDMI input/output cable. Be thinking about that.
How do you intend to use this new part or new computer? What's the heaviest load it's likely to encounter?
I have used my desktop computer for games, 3D rendering, and making movies out of both. Currently, it gets choppy for L4D2, runs laggy as hell in Magicka (which I don't play anymore), runs roughly 10-25 fps in Dungeon Defenders fresh from a reboot. For League of Legends, it runs at 60 fps under most circumstances, 20-30 fps in big team fights, and ... 5 fps for really stupid things like Karthus' ult on 5 guys. When recording with Fraps, the best it can do is 30 fps. It's quite likely that's the fault of the hard drive though, as it records uncompressed video on a 16xx by 1080 resolution.
I have also done an extensive amount of engineering work on it, such as having 3 MS Words and Excels docs, 4 Adobe Reader docs, Paint.NET, PGSuper, Mozilla FF, LoL streams, and calculator open all at once. Lulz.
