Got my VISA for the USA some 5 years ago (it's no longer valid now). Pretty bizarre procedure yeah, though I went with my father since he had to renew his too. The questions weren't really bizarre though, just a lot of "go sit there", "what are you going to do in the US?". But since I was just going there to visit Disney with a bought touristic package and a ticket to come back it went pretty swell.
Don't know about your reasons to go there, they tend to be more annoying if you are at the age of starting to work, going for an indeterminate period, single, no ticket back, etc.
