its a hp pavilion dv9000 laptop, about 4-5 years old.

How do you intend to use this new part or new computer? What's the heaviest load it's likely to encounter?
General home use, school work, gaming. WoW, League of Legends, Starcraft 2.

If you live anywhere other than the United States, please indicate your country.
In the US.

I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundl...mbo.752648. Its at the top end of what I would like to spend but with my very limited knowledge seems to fit what I would like to do. Any opinions?

That rig you posted doesn't have a discrete graphics card. Without that, you might have trouble with the gaming part.

I suggest building something around: the Intel i5 2500K (the K is very important)

Just to give you an idea on the price. I've recently built a machine for a friend for about $1100 CAD, it had the i5 2500K and a Nvidia 560TI, just those two components cost ~$550, of course you can get a cheaper graphics card for about ~150 and the cpu ~ $200, even that's $350 not including tax, leaving $50-$250 (according to your budget) for the other parts.
