Welp, since I DO need to learn how to play a support.... I'm thinking of taking up soraka (have been meaning to for a while)... gonna have to wait til she comes around as a free week... maybe. I don't think I wanna try sona, since I'm not into her play style. Either soraka or janna....
What else counts as actual support, when people ask you to pick a support?

Soraka, Taric, Sona, Janna, and Alistar are more or less the go-to characters.
Zilean (typically solos due to sweet early game bombing?), Karma (Also a decent solo AP), Blitzcrank, Leona are also solid supports. There's talk of even playing GP and Nunu as support.
Janna's the only one I've really played, her only problem is no sustain in lane. But she packs buttfucktons of CC and that amazing ult. Clutch feelings will be had while saving squishy ass.
