I think that container he broke in the first episode gave him that ability. As ItachiPower said, it seems that everyone has a void that represents their personality. For example, that guy who had a pair of shears as his void was like a wolf in sheep's clothing. Gai apparently has the power to see what a person's void is, which is likely why he wanted to get that container before but Shu got it instead, and that's why Gai needs Shu to join him.
