How the hell would you know whether he's interested in the human mind or not? The brain is amazing and it's so interesting to learn about cognitive bias, perception of time, sensory input and how all of that affects everyday life. Psychology is one of the fields that has huge relevance to everyday life and it would have applications anywhere so if he wants to do it during his year of not doing anything else, I say go for it and see how you like it. If you don't like it, pick up biomed next year, no big deal.
