Interesting red herring. Regardless of the bad teachers (there is always bad apples), teachers should be getting paid more regardless. Why not? I get paid ~$35/hour (37,500원 to be exact) here to teach English privately and I'm a sh`it teacher. I teach English conversation -- essentially I meet with my students and get coffee/dinner and go out and we converse in English. I point out the nuances of English grammar and pronunciation and get paid for that.
If I TAUGHT English, I could expect a lot more. I COULD be asking for $50+/hour (~50,000원
if I taught at the same level as a regular teacher, who has to put in much more time/work and deals with a lot more idiots. I think my pay is reasonable for most teachers.
Education is important beyond description...at least I don't have the patience to properly articulate myself right now, but yeah. I think teachers should be paid like the OP's quote suggests. :o
