It's something you have to force yourself to get into the habit of. While wards help, most people (myself included) suffer from tunnel vision while playing and don't check the mini map every so often to check who's missing or if someone is coming down your warded river. There's been many times when their jungler was coming down the river and we had it warded and I just wasn't looking and got myself killed. I've gotten better at it though.
