You're seeing the type of puppet use as tank.
Puppet can be used as tank, or distraction. As a tank you put puppet infront of you and it tanks the damage. This is only effective once puppet is level 12+ and can take many hits from monster. With only 500 hp, puppet is going to die in its 1st or 2nd hit, making it very ineffective.
For distraction, puppet is placed in a spot where it can't be hit, and then used so you can attack freely. This is where its timer comes in, and 5 seconds isn't enough. My build worked out where I had 1 puppet for a level before getting it up to 3, I was at coolies at the time. It had its moments, mostely it "replaced" PKB, I would throw the puppet behind an agro'd coolie and it would go chase that instead. But definately not for mobs, and PKB was far more reliable anyways.
