If it was THAT easy, they probably would've already done it. I, too, agree that it would be the BEST way, but it's also true that they'd have to do it for EACH item of EACH hacked account. It would be possible, if they have the right logs to be able to track items in that way, but it would still take very long. Too long for it to be even worth for them to do.
We all know they don't actually care about players, and if they see that something wouldn't economically be worth doing, they just won't do it. Think of the players who will decide to keep playing (they'd be a minority, but still) and scroll/cube their equips from scratch. They'd just earn money from that.
Sadly, we just have to deal with having an incredibly incompetent and greedy company run this game. Hell, I wouldn't even be surprised if they didn't have a way to track items as you are suggesting.
