No, i think the chapter is meant to explain why hodi is such a chump in comparison to the straw hats. One side has conviction, while hodi and his gang "are just empty opponents". Because they lack will, and because they lack any real reasoning behind their actions, they fight terribly in comparison to hardened fighters like the straw hats. That's why he has to use those pills.
Also, soul sword is pretty f'ucking cool. I never really expected brook to actually be a competent fighter, but he's immortal so that kind of makes up for it.
