Debunking my argument with stuff like "i want to" is all fine and well, but it would be nice to consider what exactly you're getting for it's ~$230 price point (16 GB + screen protectors/case, if you're into that sort of thing. Not many people aren't.). I don't know your budget or needs or psychology towards spending money or having things just to say you have it, but you already knew this, so...no point mentioning it against me. :/ I'm just trying to help you make an informed decision.
Why shouldn't you use upgrades that are sitting there? Because you're going to want to upgrade eventually and it'll be a lot more money to upgrade if you do it now...might as well get the most value out of your purchase. Like...spend $2xx now to get decent stuff, or wait and spend probably around the same amount to get revolutionary stuff.
Also, are those 4 lines of yours personal or something?
I have 3/4 lines available to me for upgrades. The last is a family member's to use if he so chooses. An iPhone, after tax, comes to about 215 dollars on contract. I don't use cases or screen protectors. They both bother me, and I baby my technology. I've never dropped my phone. An iPhone 4 being sold off contract would, at this point in time, net me about 300 or so dollars. So again, I am rather curious as to why this would be a bad idea if I have upgrades just sitting there. I would be losing out on the chance to make a profit(well, we'll call it that simply because I'd lose money letting them sit there. It's certainly not a profit with the prices AT&T charges for their plans.). I know exactly what the upgrade entails.
Also, not likely will it be released in the spring. It simply wouldn't make sense for Apple to release the next iPhone so soon. They typically have, at a minimum, a year between product cycles. They don't often deviate from that and make it any less. There's also really no reason to. Even on AT&T they had above and beyond record-breaking activations yesterday because of the 4S. Even despite people's initial disappointment in the phone, Apple still sold a record number which is no surprise.
