I think I've found a time and place for my smartcasts. Honestly, smartcasting seems like I have less control and finesse than regular key + mouse click.
First 10 seconds: enemy fountain. No reason not to.
1 minute mark: jungle or a lane.
1:50 mark: jungle or a lane.
Critical jungle times (requires extensive knowledge, of which I do not possess): critical location, such as red buff, or a potential ambush spot by early gankers such as Lee Sin. If you're tryharding, catching the jungler in the act means bonus points to your ego.
If you're plopping CV in the middle of the jungle, try to light up at least two camps.
If there's a raging fight going on, use CV to deny the enemy cover from grass and fog of war!
... or you can just use it to deny cover for someone you're trying to kill or evade.
... or find out a duo laner is actually MIA.
If you think the other team is doing a critical team objective, you can probably check with CV.
