If anyone has any tips for me plz let me know lol. Diving into a new game is pretty overwhelming that's why I have all these questions.
@above - I didn't think archer was too bad when I had my long bow, but I ended up finding a much better short bow, vendored my long bow, and was like ............. yeah I want my long bow back. The damage did seem higher than warrior though, even though warrior has a lot of cleave. I didn't try xbow at all. I tried to solo the "kill 300 orcs" as a shortbow user at lvl 10 and ended up dying at around 200ish. I went back again on my warrior at lvl 11 and it was 10x easier.
Mercenaries are probably one of the hardest classes to come up with a build for. The vast majority of the skills that a Mercenary wants from 1st job are passives, and maybe two or three attacking skills, which aren't usually raised past level 6 as far as I'm aware. In 2nd job, they get a few SP in nearly every skill.
As someone who has a Mercenary, you'll have to be aware of your cooldowns. The attack animations of some skills are a bit slow as well, but they make up for it in being able to smash enemy superarmor/interrupt enemy attacks quite efficiently, along with some pretty good mobbing. There is even a chargeup skill that grants you superarmor along with reducing the amount of damage you take by like 80%(?) while charging up. Mercenaries also have some valuable enemy damage reduction/party attack up and superarmor support skills, in comparison to the Swordmaster which is pretty much all DPS.
(The 3rd job of every class has an advanced version of one of the 2nd job skills. I think the Mercenary 3rd job classes are the only classes that do not go for these advanced skills. It's not that their 2nd job sucks, but it's that their 2nd job skills are so awesome that people have a hard time specializing in just the axe/Barbarian or hammer/Destroyer path, so people try to get all the useful skills from both branches.)
This site has a few builds that can probably help you out, although the Mercenary builds are a bit lacking in terms of information.
