You can have top mage damage if you give up your party and non-damage self buffs. Plot aside, in pure class utility terms, you don't want to make AMs feel obsolete again.

Otherwise they'll whine and whine till your weapons are -25% to your damage just like mine was.

I do believe that legends should be on top of their brothers. After all, they are the LEGENDS that defeated the Black Mage.
