Rope and Thread used to be sold by the "Card". It's a wooden plank (shaped like the thing in the picture) and the rope is wound around it. Thread was sold on cardboard Cards (still is actually) when the amount of thread is too small to justify the cost of putting it on a spool.
worst part is that i knew this, yay living with grandma for my first 10 years? (yay indeed)
