Why would he train himself to be able to fight Aizen for 17 months after Aizen has been locked away?
Hmm.
If Kubo had said "to get at Ichigo's/Byakuya's Level" or just "I've been getting stronger these past 17 months" it would've been fine, but why specifically mention a threat long since dealt with.
Hmmmm.
If you were fighting a foe whose power was beyond your comprehension only to have him SEALED AWAY (aka possibly coming back) that creates a phenomenon that renji can't mentally overcome. Aizen will never be defeatable by his own power because he was never comparable to renji before being sealed. Ichigo isn't very motivating for renji (at the time anyway) because not only did he lose his powers, his physical growth is unheard of because he has like 3 different power sources at this point while renji just has his bankai. Aizen breeds both motivation to reach his level and anger in being too weak to do anything for renji, making aizen the ideal training model for renji to overcome in order to reach a much higher level of power. Byakuya is hilariously weak in comparison. (despite us not knowing how strong he is right now)
If you're 100% caught up with "Hunter x Hunter", you'll know what i mean. The killing of komugi before the king can beat her in Gun-gi is the exact same situation. Komugi becomes undefeatable to the king which makes him the opposite of his destined being. "The ultimate species". He would be the best at Gun-gi by default, not by victory.
