If Kubo had said "to get at Ichigo's/Byakuya's Level" or just "I've been getting stronger these past 17 months" it would've been fine, but why specifically mention a threat long since dealt with.

Unnecessary spaces are unnecessary.
Maybe because Aizen/Ichigo could pomegranate all over Byakuya or maybe because Aizen was the strongest bad guy Soul Society has faced up to this point. I hope by now Renji realizes that Ichigo is on a different level than everyone else.
