I think they are just trying to reflect the power difference, renji pretty much explaining it. If you think about, bleach only had 1 real villain up till now, everything else has been henchman, i mean I feel like captains are the new "Norm" now.
Now I don't know what new villain they'll come up with but, aizen pretty much pissed all over the head captain (in a cheap way mind you but still). It's kind of the problem DBZ had after frieza.
